Greenwood investigated by UEFA

Mason Greenwood and former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi are under UEFA investigation following provocative actions during Fenerbahce's Champions League play-off victory over Lyon.

The incident occurred during the second leg at Groupama Stadium in France on 26/8, where Fenerbahce defeated hosts Lyon 2-1, advancing with an aggregate score of 3-2.

After the final whistle, Guendouzi, who previously played for Marseille—Lyon's long-standing rival—repeatedly provoked the home fans. This angered Lyon's goalkeeper coach, Antonio Ferreira, who emerged from the tunnel and appeared to kick at Guendouzi.

Players and coaching staff from both teams immediately rushed forward, leading to a chaotic scuffle. Several individuals punched Ferreira as he was pinned against a wall. Security personnel intervened to prevent further clashes between players and coaches.

Greenwood also participated. The former Man Utd and Marseille forward made a gesture towards his groin area and grimaced at the Lyon fans. Guendouzi later repeated this action and reportedly shouted "Allez l'OM," meaning "Go Marseille."

Guendouzi had been a controversial figure throughout the match. Before and during the game, the former Arsenal player repeatedly showed his middle finger to the home fans after being booed and whistled.

Tensions escalated on the pitch. After Fenerbahce extended their lead to 2-0, Guendouzi turned to the opposing fans and shouted an obscenity. During the post-match scuffle, he became a target for Lyon players, prompting teammates, including Ederson and Romelu Lukaku, to defend him.

Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso criticized Guendouzi, stating, "You must be humble in victory and celebrate with your teammates in the changing room. Congratulations to them, but there was no need to act that way," said the 2018 World Cup winner.

Guendouzi defended his actions, claiming Lyon fans had insulted his family throughout the match. Fenerbahce coach Ismail Kartal also voiced support for the midfielder.

Fenerbahce is scheduled to play their opening Champions League qualifying round match against Roma on 10/9. However, it remains unclear whether UEFA's investigation and disciplinary process will conclude before the game.

Guendouzi previously played for Lorient, Arsenal, Hertha BSC, Marseille, and Lazio before joining Fenerbahce in January 2026. Greenwood, in turn, played for Man Utd, Getafe, and Marseille before arriving at Fenerbahce this summer.

Beyond Guendouzi and Greenwood, Fenerbahce's squad currently features several other stars, including: former Man City players Ederson and Nathan Ake, former Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar, former Real Madrid and PSG forward Marco Asensio, and 2018 World Cup winner N'Golo Kante, as well as Romelu Lukaku.
