On 5/7, Erling Haaland's two late goals secured a historic 2-1 win for Norway against Brazil at MetLife Stadium in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. The Norwegian striker opened the scoring in the 80th minute, heading a cross from the left wing into the bottom right corner. Ten minutes later, he fired a low left-footed shot from just outside the 16-meter box, beating Alisson Becker to make it 2-0. Neymar converted a penalty in injury time, but it was not enough for the Samba Kings to mount a comeback.
"This match is the greatest in Norwegian history. It's unbelievable. We played a great game against Brazil", Haaland stated. "We are proud to have beaten strong teams. This will inspire many young people, just as I was inspired when I was young".
Haaland's decisive performance led him to declare 5/7 "one of the 'craziest days'" in the country's history, urging Norwegians to "just enjoy these moments and this victory".
This victory marks the first time Norway has reached the quarterfinals in four World Cup appearances. It was also their second consecutive 2-1 win against Brazil in the tournament, having previously defeated the South American giants by the same scoreline in the 1998 World Cup group stage in France. Notably, Brazil has never managed to beat Norway in their encounters, with a record of two draws and three losses.

Haaland continues to lead Norway's charge in this tournament. While not known for his dribbling, his off-ball movement and one-touch finishing are considered among the best in football today. His two goals against Brazil bring his tournament tally to 7, matching Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi. The French forward currently leads the Golden Boot race due to his additional two assists.
Following the match, Haaland led the Norwegian players in their distinctive Viking rowing celebration. Captain Martin Odegaard handed drumsticks to Haaland, making him the "captain" to set the rhythm. This marked the third consecutive large-scale celebration, following their progression from the group stage and their win against Ivory Coast in the round of 32, with the entire team and Norwegian fans participating in one of the biggest celebrations at the 2026 World Cup.
"I think all of Norway is now celebrating with the rowing style", Coach Solbakken commented. "It's great that it has become a memorable image at the World Cup, and Norwegian fans are enjoying a wonderful summer".
Norway will face the winner of the Mexico versus England match in the quarterfinals on 12/7 in Miami, US.
Coach Solbakken expressed uncertainty about how much further his team could advance. However, he affirmed that he and his players are ready to face any opponent, as history has turned a new page, and they are committed to giving their utmost.
