Michael Carrick assumed leadership of the team after Ruben Amorim's dismissal in early 2026. At that time, Man Utd faced instability, lingering near mid-table. Since then, however, the team has secured 23 points in its last 10 matches, ascending to the top 3 and holding a strong prospect for next season's Champions League.
According to The Telegraph, the "Red Devils" board is now highly considering offering Carrick a long-term contract, rather than awaiting a big name manager after the 2026 World Cup. While a final decision has not been made, internal sentiment favors retaining the 44-year-old former midfielder.

The improvement extends beyond just results. Under Carrick, Man Utd exhibits a more balanced playing style, with players utilized in their optimal positions. Bruno Fernandes, for example, has been advanced, maximizing his creativity and goal-scoring ability. He even surpassed David Beckham's single-season Premier League assist record.
Defensively, Harry Maguire has also seen a resurgence in form since the team reverted to a four-man defense. The English center-back acknowledged Carrick's adjustments helped him regain confidence, following a difficult period under Amorim.
Another contributing factor to the upturn in fortunes is Man Utd's absence from European competitions this season. A lighter fixture schedule has provided players with more time for rest and training, leading to noticeable improvements in both physical condition and tactical understanding.
Beyond tactical expertise, Carrick has also impressed with his dressing room management. Despite his calm demeanor, he has demonstrated firmness when necessary. After the team's sole defeat to Newcastle, Carrick reportedly "laid down the law" to the players, sending a strong message about performance standards.
These positive changes have led many former players to endorse Carrick's appointment. Beckham noted that the team has rediscovered a calmness and identity that was absent for a decade, while also praising Carrick's ability to unify the squad.

Despite this, Man Utd remains cautious. The board, including sporting director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada, is not rushing to approach other candidates while the team performs well. Previously, the club had contacted or considered various coaches such as Luis Enrique, Thomas Tuchel, Roberto De Zerbi, and Mauricio Pochettino, but had not reached a suitable agreement.
Carrick's primary concern remains his experience. Before returning to Old Trafford, he only managed Middlesbrough and had not established a long-term track record at the highest level. This leads some to believe that the current impressive run is insufficient to guarantee sustained success.
Furthermore, Man Utd's squad still requires reinforcements to compete for titles. The club is seeking at least one top-class central midfielder to replace Casemiro, alongside options to strengthen the defense. The question arises whether Carrick will be entrusted with building the squad for the future.
