The asian regional play-off round featured four teams that lost in the quarterfinals of the women's asian cup 2026: Philippines, Uzbekistan, Taiwan, and North Korea. These teams were divided into two pairs to compete for two world cup berths.
Aware of their upcoming play-off match-up, both Philippines and Uzbekistan did not exert full effort in their quarterfinals against superior opponents, instead giving opportunities to their substitute players. Consequently, Philippines lost 0-7 to Japan, and Uzbekistan lost 0-6 to South Korea.

Entering the decisive match at Gold Coast stadium in Australia, Philippines made nine changes to their starting lineup compared to the quarterfinals. The Southeast Asian representative played assertively and strategically, overcoming Uzbekistan with two assists from Jael-Marie Guy. Both assists followed the same pattern: a run down the right flank followed by a cross to the far post.
In the 47th minute, Guy crossed the ball to Angela Beard, who tapped it in off the underside of the crossbar to open the scoring. Five minutes later, the forward born in 2007, currently playing for Brown University in the US, again assisted Jaclyn Sawicki, who headed the ball into the far corner to seal the 2-0 victory.
Immediately after the final whistle, the Philippines players from the technical area rushed onto the field, embracing and jumping in celebration together. In contrast, Uzbekistan's players collapsed to the ground, with many using their hands or jerseys to hide their tears.
This marks the second consecutive time Philippines has qualified for the women's world cup, matching the Southeast Asian record held by Thailand, who participated in 2015 and 2019. Vietnam was the other team from the region to compete in the major tournament, doing so in 2023.
In the previous tournament, Philippines did not need to play a play-off, securing their spot by reaching the semifinals of the women's asian cup 2022. Philippines caused an upset by defeating co-host New Zealand 1-0, but ultimately could not advance past the group stage after losing 0-2 to Switzerland and 0-6 to Norway.
Despite this, in the women's world cup historical standings, Philippines ranks 30th among 44 participating teams, with three points and a goal difference of -7. Thailand is four places behind, also with three points but a goal difference of -26. Meanwhile, Vietnam ranks 42nd, with no points and a goal difference of -12.
The women's world cup 2027 will be held in Brazil from 24/6 to 25/7/2027. This will be the first edition of the tournament to feature 32 teams. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has 11 slots, followed by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) with six, Africa and North/Central America with four each, South America with three, and Oceania with one. The remaining three spots will be determined in the inter-confederation play-off round.
Before Philippines, four other representatives from the Asian Football Confederation had already secured their berths by reaching the semifinals of the women's asian cup 2026: South Korea, Japan, China, and Australia. The sixth slot will be determined after the remaining play-off match between North Korea and Taiwan, scheduled for 17h today. Given their superior skill, North Korea is expected to win.
The two teams that lost in the Asian play-offs still have a chance to qualify by participating in the inter-confederation play-offs, alongside teams from Africa, North/Central America, South America (two slots), Oceania, and Europe (one slot).
This round consists of two stages. Teams from Asia, Africa, Oceania, along with the lowest-ranked South American team, will compete from November to December 2026 for two berths. Subsequently, these teams will join two North/Central American teams, the remaining South American team, and a European team to compete in February 2027 for three additional women's world cup spots.
