Spain coach: 'Cape Verde left no space open'

Spain national team coach Luis De La Fuente praised the opponent after the 0-0 draw in their opening match of group H, World Cup 2026.

"Cape Verde organized their play effectively. They defended deep, leaving no space open. We had chances, but lacked freshness. When the ball doesn't go in, you just have to accept it", coach De La Fuente said.

The Euro 2024 champion coach stated that while outsiders might perceive a subpar performance from Spain, the reality within the team was different. He confirmed the team anticipated Cape Verde's deep defensive strategy and strong physical condition, expecting a tough challenge. He contended that the 0-0 draw did not signify underlying issues for Spain.

"We have been unbeaten for 32 consecutive matches. That shows we are a reliable team. However, a lack of freshness, subtlety, and precision in the final passes can lead to such results. There is no cause for undue doubt or concern. Regardless, we remain steadfast on our path", De La Fuente added.

The Spain national team coach emphasized that tournaments like the World Cup are always intense and difficult. Participating teams are not only diverse in playing style but also know how to maximize their strengths. Therefore, he urged Spain to continue improving, striving with absolute precision at a high level to overcome challenges.

Spain's two attacking stars, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, only entered the match from the bench. De La Fuente explained that both players still faced fitness issues, so he introduced them primarily to regain match sharpness after their injuries and to prepare them for upcoming fixtures.

In their opening match on the evening of 15/6, Spain controlled possession 62%, took 23 shots, with 8 on target, yet failed to score. Despite creating several opportunities, they were thwarted by the crossbar and goalkeeper Vozinha. Meanwhile, Cape Verde succeeded with their deep defensive strategy. The African team typically positioned eight players in their own half, controlling space and forming a solid defensive "wall" in front of their goal.

The 0-0 draw was a surprise, considering the disparity between the two teams. Before kickoff, Spain ranked second in the FIFA standings, 60 places above their opponent.

According to bookmakers, Spain, alongside France, is a top 1 contender for the World Cup 2026 title, with odds of 5/1 (bet one, win five). England follows with odds of 8.5/1, Brazil at 9/1, and Argentina and Portugal both at 11/1.
