Yesterday's 3-2 comeback defeat to Vietnam extended Thailand's gold medal drought in men's football at the SEA Games to 8 years. In the three previous editions, they were eliminated from the group stage in 2019 and lost two finals, to Vietnam in 2022 and Indonesia in 2023.
However, according to expert Buranit, this does not mean Thai football is declining. "Don't be overly pessimistic. The SEA Games is just a regional tournament," he wrote in the commentary section of Siamsport, Thailand's leading sports newspaper. "This is a time to reflect, adjust, and aim for larger goals in continental competitions."

In fact, Thailand holds the most successful record in SEA Games men's football, with 16 gold medals—a significant lead over other rivals like Malaysia (6) and Myanmar (5). Consequently, there were periods when they "neglected" this arena, instead focusing their efforts on larger stages such as Asian competitions or World Cup aspirations.
However, Thailand has not achieved any of its major goals and is even allowing regional countries to close the gap. Vietnam has secured three gold medals in men's football at the SEA Games in the last four editions, Malaysia boasts a strong national league as its foundation, while Indonesia is rapidly improving its standing through a European-origin naturalization policy.
Returning to yesterday's match, Buranit admitted he was shocked by Thailand's defeat. The hosts started with vigor, leading 2-0 after just 31 minutes thanks to a superb free-kick from Yotsakon Burapha and a clean strike from outside the box by Seksan Ratree. However, in the second half, the Thai players completely lost control of the game, allowing Vietnam to score two quick goals: a penalty from Nguyen Dinh Bac and an own goal by Waris Choolthong. In extra time, substitute Nguyen Thanh Nhan scored a close-range rebound, sealing a 3-2 victory for Vietnam. This marked the first time in 58 years that Thailand failed to win a SEA Games men's football gold medal while playing on home soil.
"Watching the first half, I felt that everything was happening too easily," Buranit wrote. "Thailand led 2-0, while Vietnam created almost no pressure. Many of us even thought: 'Is this match too convenient for Thailand?'"
According to Buranit, the turning point was goalkeeper Sorawat Phosamanpham fouling Nguyen Dinh Bac in the box early in the second half, which allowed Thailand's lead to be cut and they lost control of the game to Vietnam. "From that moment, Thailand seemed shocked and lost control of the match," he continued. "We were constantly under pressure, our defense was confused by the relentless attacks, and the 2-2 equalizer was an inevitable consequence. It's hard to believe this was the same team that played so confidently in the first half."

Following this tournament, teams will quickly focus on preparing for the U23 Asia Championship 2026, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia from 7/1 to 25/1/2026. Thailand is in Group D with Iraq, Australia, and China, while Vietnam shares Group A with Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Kyrgyzstan. The teams will play a single round-robin format, with the four group winners and four best runners-up advancing to the quarterfinals.
This year's tournament will not serve as a qualifier for the 2028 Olympics. Within Southeast Asia, Vietnam holds the best record in this competition, having been the runner-up in 2018. Thailand previously reached the quarterfinals in 2020.
