Why Mourinho received a sprinkler

An Italian journalist presented coach Jose Mourinho with a sprinkler adorned in Inter's iconic blue and black, a gesture recalling the club's 2010 treble victory and revealing a deeply personal story behind the gift.

Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri became a notable figure before the Real Madrid vs. Inter Milan match in the opening round of the Champions League group stage. Following Mourinho's press conference at the Bernabeu on 7/9, Palmeri surprised the Portuguese coach with a special gift: a sprinkler decorated in Inter's blue and black colors.

The gift evoked memories of the 2010 Champions League semi-final at Camp Nou, where Mourinho's Inter eliminated Barcelona. The iconic image of "the special one" running onto the pitch to celebrate amidst the activated sprinklers after the match became a symbolic moment.

However, behind this seemingly humorous gesture lies a lesser-known story. Palmeri revealed on Marca's "Otra Ronda" program that the gift for Mourinho carried a much deeper personal meaning.

"This was planned. I don't usually keep sprinklers at home, so I had to go buy one. I also had to find Inter's blue and black strips," Palmeri recounted. The Italian journalist admitted to breaking the rules of a typical press conference. "I know people don't do that, and I might have gone a bit overboard," he conceded. But Palmeri still wanted to do it.

Palmeri had waited 16 years for Inter to reunite with Mourinho in a European competition. He also felt an emotional debt to the Portuguese coach.

The Italian journalist recalled the 2010 Champions League semi-final, when Mourinho led Inter to eliminate Pep Guardiola's Barca with an aggregate score of ba-hai at Camp Nou. That night was etched deep in the memories of Inter fans and also held special significance for Real Madrid.

"It was like a tribute, a good luck wish," Palmeri said. For him, the sprinkler symbolized Inter's history and Mourinho's journey.

The true reason Palmeri prepared this gift lay in another story. "When Mourinho did what he did then, he made a relative of mine smile, even though that person was experiencing the greatest pain a father could endure," Palmeri shared.

This statement completely changed the meaning of the gift. Palmeri said that the relative was very important to him and had gone through a particularly difficult period in life. Inter's victory over Barca at that time helped this person find a smile for a moment, after a long time of thinking it was no longer possible.

"I always wanted to say that when I had the chance, I would pay tribute to Jose," Palmeri recounted, adding that he had not found the right time to explain to Mourinho the true reason behind the gift.

Another difficulty was finding a suitable gift for Mourinho. "What do you give someone who has everything, who can buy anything they want?" Palmeri asked.

The answer came in the form of a sprinkler. An item that seemed unrelated, yet held great significance for Italian football and especially the personal story Palmeri wanted to recall. "I suddenly thought of the sprinkler, so I chose it," he explained.

Beyond the story of the gift, Palmeri also analyzed today's Real vs. Inter match. Palmeri believed Inter faced a significant disadvantage having to travel to the Bernabeu right after a frustrating defeat for their opponent. Last weekend, Real lost 0-mot on Betis's home ground in a match where they squandered chances and were denied a controversial penalty retake. Palmeri warned that the Spanish team would enter the match with determination, and anger could erupt in Madrid.

Conversely, Inter were in good spirits after their 3-hai comeback victory against Napoli, though they had expended considerable energy. Palmeri believed Inter needed to play to their full potential and fight to the end, but he also stressed that a defeat against Real was not a disaster for Inter, as this was the toughest challenge they would face.
