Matthew Jones, founder of Bread Ahead, revealed that Borough Market management notified the bakery of its relocation requirement, citing its "excessive success" following the brand's international franchise expansion.

Bread Ahead started as a small stall at Borough Market in 2013, growing into a chain. The brand gained recognition for its creme brûlee donuts and mascarpone blueberry cheesecake donuts.

Matthew Jones expressed disappointment with the management's decision in a statement on his personal Instagram account. He recounted that Bread Ahead launched without corporate investment, driven by faith, a passion for baking, and perseverance. Jones considered Borough Market "the home where Bread Ahead matured."

"I never imagined that business success would lead to us losing our home," Jones stated, arguing the brand's growth should be acknowledged, not used to end a lease. The bakery is set to open its first New York, US, location in November, having already established a presence in Dubai, Bangkok, and Saudi Arabia.

The news of Bread Ahead's potential departure from Borough ignited widespread opposition on social media. Many customers criticized the decision as unreasonable management by the market's administration.

This is not the first lease dispute at Borough Market. Maria’s Market Cafe, an eatery operating since the early 1960s, is also engaged in a legal battle after market management declined to renew its contract.

A Borough Market representative stated they are collaborating with Bread Ahead but declined to provide lease details, citing confidentiality.

"Our relationship with traders is important, whether they are currently operating or have become part of the market's history," a Borough Market representative noted.

Borough Market, one of London's oldest food markets with a history spanning about 1,000 years, offers high-quality produce and street food.

Matthew Jones is currently seeking community support to overturn the market management's decision. He emphasized that he seeks reconsideration of the bakery's growth trajectory from a small stall, not a contentious dispute.

The Bread Ahead store at Borough Market remains open as negotiations continue between both parties.
