Foreign visitor struck by train while sitting near Kham Thien 'train street'

A cafe owner has been fined after a Chinese tourist was hit by a train engine while sitting too close to the tracks to film a video at Kham Thien train street cafe.

On 7/8, at approximately 1:30 PM, a group of 4 Chinese tourists visited the Kham Thien train street area to film a passing train. One female tourist sat close to the railway tracks, holding her phone to record. As the train approached, its engine struck her, causing her phone to fly out of her hand. The incident caused no personal injuries, but the phone was damaged. The female tourist left the scene shortly after.

On the afternoon of 11/8, representatives from the Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam Ward Police in Ha Noi announced a fine of 2,5 million VND against the coffee business located at 14B, 28C, Nha Dau residential building. The fine was imposed for violating railway safety corridor regulations by allowing customers to sit too close to the tracks, leading to the collision. Following the incident, the Administrative Management of Social Order Police Department, Ha Noi City Police, directed the Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam Ward Police to deploy forces to ensure security, traffic safety, and public order in the area.

The "train street" cafe area primarily attracts foreign visitors seeking the unique experience of watching trains pass through a narrow space. Some businesses often invite customers to sit directly beside the tracks, even stationing staff outside to "watch out" for authorities. Upon spotting officials, cafe employees quickly clear tables and chairs, ushering customers indoors.

In November 2025, the Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam Ward Police, in coordination with other forces, inspected, cleared, and addressed violations of the railway traffic safety corridor in this area. Despite these efforts, some coffee businesses have continued to operate, welcoming customers and placing tables and chairs close to the railway tracks.
