Male tourist climbs Mui Dien cliff for photos, disregards danger

A male tourist left the designated visitor area to climb a steep cliff edge overlooking the sea at Mui Dien for dramatic photos, despite clear dangers.

A representative from the Mui Dien Relic Management Board reported that the incident happened on the morning of 10/7. The male tourist ventured past the designated visitor area, ascending a precarious cliff edge overlooking the sea to take photos, despite numerous warning signs.

The management board noted that this area features steep terrain, slippery rocks, and no handholds, posing a significant risk of accidents from slips or falls.

Nguyen Viet, a local tour guide, stated that he and several others present repeatedly urged the male tourist to return to the safe area, but the individual persisted in taking photos. Following the incident, Viet posted a video to tourism groups as a warning.

The video quickly went viral on social media, attracting numerous comments. Most opinions criticized the dangerous pursuit of "unique" photos as irresponsible, urging tourists to comply with safety regulations when visiting coastal areas with challenging terrain.

Local guides report that Mui Dien is typically crowded from around 4h, with many visitors arriving to witness the sunrise. The expansive visitor area, characterized by numerous rock formations and hidden spots, makes it challenging for the management board to monitor and remind all tourists. Therefore, adherence to safety regulations largely depends on individual awareness.

In response, the management board announced plans to review and enhance safety measures, including adding fences and warning signs in critical areas. They will also coordinate with authorities to explore punitive measures for deliberate violations, aiming to ensure tourist safety.

Mui Dien, also known as Mui Dai Lanh, is located in Phuoc Tan village, Phu Yen ward, Dak Lak province. It stands as one of two mainland locations in Vietnam that welcome the first rays of dawn, alongside Mui Doi in Khanh Hoa province. The area retains its wild and peaceful beauty.
