A recent survey by booking application Hotels.com in July revealed that more than 50% of participants prioritize quietness to avoid disturbing other guests. Not slamming doors at night emerged as the top rule. Additionally, 40% found treating hotel staff rudely or allowing pets to roam freely in common areas to be among the most unacceptable behaviors.

Playing loud music or shouting in hallways also elicited similar annoyance.

"Unwritten rules might not get you evicted from a hotel, but they will certainly earn you unfavorable looks from other guests," said Melanie Fish, Vice President of Global Public Relations at Hotels.com.

While public displays of affection at the pool seem to bother few, taking large items like decorations, towels, or bathrobes from the hotel is a different matter. Guests may be charged if they take these items home.

If guests forget personal items, they should ask hotel staff rather than taking things without permission. Many accommodations readily provide common necessities such as: phone chargers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, and hair dryers.

According to Hotels.com, unwritten rules of conduct, alongside explicit regulations, contribute to a pleasant stay experience for both guests and staff.
