Off-season cloud hunting in Ta Xua

Ta Xua in the summer is quiet, an ideal place to escape the heat, and with a little luck, still offers plenty of opportunities for cloud hunting.

Ta Xua, a highland commune in Son La province, is located 180 km from Hanoi and takes about 4.5 hours to reach. This tourist destination is famous in the autumn and winter (from October to April of the following year) thanks to its majestic landscape, favorable weather, and especially its rolling seas of clouds. In the summer, fewer tourists visit Ta Xua due to frequent rain, which makes travel difficult.

An Ninh and Sang (travel bloggers Onthemars) visited Ta Xua in early July. They were fortunate to encounter very little rain and plenty of clouds throughout their trip.

Ta Xua's specialties include cafes, local restaurants, and ethnic food stalls along the way. These are also ideal spots for cloud viewing.

An Ninh shared that Ta Xua is also very beautiful in the summer.

"People often joke that cloud hunting is a 'test of character.' We monitored the weather and chose to go after a rainy week, as this increases the chances of seeing clouds and avoids the rain," An Ninh said.

Ta Xua has many destinations, among which the grassland is a must-see, with an entrance fee of 30,000 VND per person. The grassland isn't vast, but it offers views of the surrounding forests, mountains, and terraced fields.

There's also a waterfall located about 30 km from the center, about an hour's drive away. However, when Ninh arrived, the fog was too thick to enter. "People should choose a sunny day to visit the waterfall. According to the directions, the trail is only slightly steep and not long," Ninh added.

They rented a car for convenient travel during their 3 days in Ta Xua. "Since the roads are steep and narrow, if you're hesitant to rent a car, you can contact the homestays to arrange transportation," Ninh suggested.

They stayed at two homestays, Cloud Forest and Po Mu Homestay, with spacious wooden houses overlooking the cloud valley. The low-season price is about 1 million VND per room for two people.

The outdoor space is filled with trees. Every morning, you can watch the clouds roll in right from your bed.

"The trip revealed a magical image of Vietnam to me. Seas of clouds weaving through valleys amidst towering mountains, cafes nestled between the sky, and a lush green grassland in the Northwest mountains," An Ninh said.
