The village that hangs underwear for decoration

Colorful bras and underwear are hung throughout Bonsall village, becoming a visitor attraction during each Bonsall Carnival.

Bonsall, a village in Derbyshire, central England, located on the edge of the Peak District National Park, is known for its ancient stone houses and, more recently, for the unique sight of underwear adorning its streets during the Bonsall festival.

While the Bonsall festival has existed for nearly 100 years, the practice of using underwear as decorative banners began only about three years ago. This novel idea quickly made a distinctive mark, helping the Bonsall Carnival gain widespread recognition on social media.

The inspiration for this unique tradition came from Jeff Phillips, a local resident now in his 80s. According to Louise Stevenson, secretary of the festival committee, Phillips and his late wife first strung a line of flags across the main street for the village's annual "best decorated house" competition, using corsets and old-fashioned women's underwear as a playful decoration. Having been in the lingerie business for over 30 years, Phillips also saw it as a way to highlight his profession.

Three years ago, as preparations for the Bonsall Carnival were underway, the organizers decided to invite Phillips to officially open the series of events, acknowledging his significant contributions to the community. The festival committee then proposed that the entire village replace traditional decorative flags with underwear, honoring Phillips' original and unique concept.

This suggestion was met with enthusiastic support from the residents. Consequently, each festival season, bras and underwear of all colors and sizes are strung across the village's roads, creating a striking contrast amidst the ancient stone architecture. Many first-time visitors to Bonsall are often surprised by the ubiquitous display of lingerie.

Unlike many larger festivals across the UK, the Bonsall Carnival maintains a strong community focus. The program spans approximately one week, featuring a variety of activities for all ages, including: a parade, folk games, running, nature walks, music performances, and local fundraising events.

The underwear banners are typically displayed from the beginning of the festival week, adorning numerous village streets. After the main events conclude, they are usually left up for an additional day before being taken down. This year, the Bonsall Carnival concluded on 1/8.

"Bonsall has always been known for doing many quirky things. Visitors often stop to take photos, and I think that's one of the great things about this village," Stevenson commented.
