Two young women spark debate in China after buying extra train seats for luggage

Two young women purchased three train seats, using one for personal belongings, and refused to let a middle-aged woman with a standing ticket sit, causing a major dispute.

On 18/8, an argument erupted on a hard-seat carriage of a train passing through Jiangsu, China. The dispute began when an elderly woman, holding a standing ticket, asked to sit in a seat occupied by the personal belongings of two young women. Her request was denied, leading the woman to plead, "Everyone is on the same train, shouldn't we be understanding?" Unable to persuade them, she called train staff for intervention.

Upon investigation, train staff confirmed the two young women had legally purchased three tickets. They informed the elderly woman that the decision to offer or refuse the seat rested with the ticket holders. Consequently, the elderly woman stood for the remainder of her journey. A representative from China Railway Corporation later stated that ticket purchasers have the right to use their bought seats, and any other passenger wishing to use a seat must obtain the owner's consent.

The incident quickly became a focal point of discussion across Chinese social media. Most online opinions supported the two young women, asserting that according to China Railway Corporation regulations, they were within their rights to use the service they had purchased and were not obligated to give up their seats.

The sentiment, "Giving way is a matter of kindness; not giving way is natural," was frequently echoed in discussions. Many users agreed the two women could not be judged as "heartless." However, others viewed their actions as "moral bullying," arguing that the elderly woman had to stand for a long distance and her desire to sit for a short while was reasonable. One commenter stated, "If she wanted understanding, she should negotiate instead of waiting for train staff to intervene."

Some critics highlighted that train travel is a public service. While passengers pay for tickets, the purpose of a seat is for human use, not for storing snacks or personal items. They argued that on popular train routes, where securing a seated ticket is often difficult, using an extra seat for personal belongings amounted to "using financial advantage to occupy public transportation resources."

Experts suggest such situations should be resolved with mutual respect. Those who purchase extra seats could explain their reasons, such as "I need this space for important items," to prevent misunderstandings. Conversely, individuals requesting a seat should do so respectfully, avoiding arguments that attempt to coerce others into being "understanding."
