Arrested for carrying a gun near Mr. Trump's golf course

Los Angeles police arrested a suspicious man carrying a gun near Mr. Trump's golf course in California, before he visited the area.

Jeanine John Taele, 38, was arrested on 2/8 outside the Trump National Golf Club in Southern California, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office confirmed on 4/8. This arrest followed a warning from federal agents about a suspicious individual observed on the golf course grounds.

Taele was discovered filming, taking photos, and carrying a 16-round magazine in his pants pocket. Authorities later seized a loaded handgun from his vehicle. He faces charges of carrying a firearm and possessing prohibited ammunition.

On 3/8, law enforcement searched Taele's home in nearby Downey city, uncovering multiple firearms, ammunition, body armor, and notebooks containing "concerning content." The US Secret Service is investigating whether Taele posed a threat to President Donald Trump. Detectives from the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force also searched his residence on 3/8 due to "potential security implications related to the incident."

A judge set bail at 250,000 USD, issuing an order that prohibits Taele from possessing weapons, requires him to stay away from the President's golf course, and mandates he remain in California pending further legal proceedings. Taele is also under investigation by the El Segundo Police Department for a robbery case from 11/2025.

News of the arrest emerged as Mr. Trump was en route to California aboard Air Force One. The US President landed in California on the evening of 4/8 to attend a Republican National Committee dinner at his Rancho Palos Verdes golf course.

The US has experienced several politically motivated violent incidents in recent years. This includes an attempted assassination of Mr. Trump in Butler city, Pennsylvania, in 7/2024. In February, US Secret Service agents shot and killed a man carrying a hunting rifle who breached the security area at President Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence. In April, a shooting also took place at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in a Washington hotel, an event attended by Mr. Trump and numerous senior leaders.
