A train departing from Bangkok on January 14 was struck by a crane while passing beneath a high-speed railway construction site in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, 230 km northeast of Bangkok.

The collision with the crane caused the train to derail and catch fire, killing at least 22 people and injuring 30. The fire was extinguished, and rescue efforts are ongoing.

Images from the scene show train cars severely damaged, with some deformed. According to updated figures from officials, the number of casualties continues to rise.
Thai officials stated they would soon release more details on the cause of the incident.
In 2020, Thailand experienced a bus-train collision east of Bangkok, which killed at least 20 people and injured dozens.
