Taiwan lies along the Pacific "Ring of Fire", a seismic fault line encircling the ocean where most of the world's earthquakes occur.
More than 100 people died in an earthquake that struck southern Taiwan in 2016. A magnitude 7,3 earthquake also killed 2,000 people on the island in 1999.
