Nearly 500 firefighters, rescue personnel, and medical staff responded to the scene. Robots were also used to search for trapped victims. Residents within a 3 km radius of the factory were evacuated.
The explosion killed 21 people and injured 61. The devastation was so extensive that windows of a nearby apartment building shattered. Police detained leaders of the fireworks company.
President Xi Jinping demanded a swift investigation into the cause of the explosion and strict accountability for those involved. He also directed authorities to strengthen risk assessment and hazard control in key industries, enhancing public safety and ensuring the protection of people's lives and property.

According to the global trade data and visualization platform OEC, last year China exported fireworks valued at USD 1.14 billion, accounting for over two-thirds of global sales. Liuyang city is renowned for its fireworks production, considered the world's largest fireworks production hub.
During the Lunar New Year in February, 20 people died from fireworks explosions in China. In recent years, many provinces and cities have imposed restrictions, and even outright bans on fireworks, due to concerns about air quality and safety.
