The 81st United Nations (UN) General Assembly high-level debate commenced on 22/9 at the UN headquarters in New York. The event, themed "Rebuilding Trust, Fostering Transformation: A United Nations Acting for All," drew over 120 heads of state, heads of government, and representatives from member states, according to TTXVN.

During the opening remarks, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and President of the 81st UN General Assembly Khalilur Rahman highlighted the world's deepening divisions. They pointed to prolonged conflicts, growing inequality, severe climate crises, and AI development that lacks governance mechanisms.

In response to these challenges, both leaders urged member states to unite in addressing global issues. Their call emphasized respecting the UN Charter and international law, asserting the need for robust UN reform to enhance governance effectiveness and prevent conflict in a volatile world.

Secretary-General Guterres specifically appealed for an end to fighting, guaranteed humanitarian access, civilian protection, disarmament promotion, and upholding accountability. He also advocated for reforming the international financial architecture to support sustainable development, fairly addressing debt issues, expanding long-term capital at reasonable costs, and ensuring gender equality.

Addressing the rise of artificial intelligence, the UN Secretary-General urged leading AI nations to establish dialogue channels. He called for sharing information on safety risks and working towards a multilateral framework for AI risk governance, coupled with independent oversight mechanisms.

Following the opening session, President Donald Trump stated that the US had achieved significant successes both domestically and internationally. He cited the successful resolution of 8 global conflicts and highlighted the Peace Council initiative proposed by the country.

High-level leaders from many nations echoed the sentiment that the world faces unprecedented challenges. They expressed strong support for the UN's central role in the multilateral system and advocated for its reform to respond more effectively to increasing crises.

The high-level debate, part of the 81st UN General Assembly session, will run from 22-28/9. This forum provides an important platform for national leaders to share visions and seek solutions for urgent global issues. Additionally, this year's High-Level Week includes several high-level thematic meetings focusing on development rights, climate change, sea-level rise, disease prevention, and nuclear disarmament.
