Iraqi forces launched raids on 28/6, targeting several politicians suspected of corruption. This operation, conducted under court orders, involved the Iraqi army and counter-terrorism unit, according to an Iraqi security official cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Videos and photos shared on social media showed security forces, including M1 Abrams tanks and armored vehicles, present in Baghdad's Green Zone. This heavily fortified area, approximately 10 square kilometers, houses important Iraqi government headquarters and numerous diplomatic facilities, including the United States embassy. Security forces were also deployed at its entrances.
Beyond the Green Zone, large-scale raids to apprehend high-ranking officials and politicians took place in other parts of Baghdad. The Iraqi News Agency (INA) quoted a senior official who confirmed that the arrested parliament members no longer enjoy immunity.
These arrests stem from accusations of corruption, based on testimony last month by Adnan al-Jumaili, Iraq's former deputy oil minister, who was also arrested last month. Earlier this month, Iraqi authorities seized 85 million USD in a case linked to Mr. Jumaili, with some of the cash found hidden underground.

Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has pledged to combat corruption and mismanagement that have plagued Iraq for years. A diplomatic official in Baghdad suggested that the 28/6 raids are part of the preparations for Mr. Zaidi's scheduled visit to the United States later this month, aiming to demonstrate his commitment to these promises.
Mr. Zaidi also pledged to ensure Iraq's exclusive state control over weapons. This comes as the country faces increasing pressure from the United States to disband Iran-backed armed groups, which have previously attacked US facilities in Iraq and other targets in the Gulf region during the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
