The incident occurred in Cebu City's Binaliw ward, involving a "four-story high" garbage pile, according to Jason Morata, the city's information officer. Philippine police on 8/1 confirmed one fatality, seven injuries, and 27 missing. Cebu Mayor Nestor Archival, however, reported 12 rescued but 38 missing. The discrepancy between police and mayoral figures is unclear.

Dozens of rescuers worked through the night at the site. Authorities deployed excavators, ambulances, and fire trucks. "All rescue forces are actively searching and bringing out the missing", Archival stated on Facebook.
The Binaliw landfill spans 10 hectares and employs 110 staff at its waste processing facility. The collapse's cause remains under investigation. Joel Garganera, a Cebu City councilor, suggested the incident likely stems from inadequate waste management. Landfills are common in many Philippine cities, including Cebu, a commercial and transport hub in the central Visayas region.
