The Lebanese army reported on 17/3 that five soldiers were hit by an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) strike while traveling by car and motorcycle in the Nabatieh region of southern Lebanon.
In a statement posted on X, the Lebanese army described the incident as "a hostile Israeli attack." The injured were transported to a hospital, but one later succumbed to severe injuries. The remaining four servicemen are currently undergoing treatment.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged reports of Lebanese military casualties stemming from an airstrike in southern Lebanon. The IDF stated that the incident is under review, emphasizing that its military operations target Hezbollah forces and are not directed against the Lebanese army.
This strike comes amidst a period of intensified Israeli attacks across Lebanese territory. Lebanese officials report that airstrikes this month have resulted in the deaths of at least 886 people, including 111 children and 67 women.

The UN Human Rights Office stated that Israeli airstrikes have destroyed numerous residential buildings in densely populated urban areas, leading to the deaths of multiple family members, including women and children. The office expressed concern that such attacks raise questions about adherence to international humanitarian law.
According to figures from the Lebanese government, nearly one-fifth of the country's population has been displaced. The United Nations has warned that this situation continues to worsen in Lebanon as the conflict expands in scale and duration.
Tensions between Israel and Lebanon escalated on 2/3, when Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets into northern Israel in support of Iran. Following this, Israel intensified its retaliatory attacks and deployed additional forces to the northern border region.
The IDF has maintained a presence at five locations in southern Lebanon since a ceasefire with Hezbollah in November 2024. Israel's Defense Minister has repeatedly warned that Lebanon risks "losing territory" if the neighboring country fails to decisively disarm Hezbollah in accordance with the ceasefire agreement.
