French President Emmanuel Macron unexpectedly rose from his seat and walked onto the stage to rebuke inattentive attendees during a youth discussion session at the Africa Forward conference in Nairobi, Kenya, on 11/5.
"Excuse me, but listen everyone: we cannot talk about culture and have inspiring people speak amidst such noise", Macron said.
The French president criticized those making noise as "disrespectful" and suggested that if they had private matters to discuss, they should "use a private room or go outside".
"If you wish to remain here, let's listen to everyone's opinions", the French leader continued.
Macron's actions immediately drew criticism on social media.
"Dear Emmanuel Macron, I don't believe it is polite or appropriate for you to come to our continent and speak to people so disrespectfully. They are not your children. Do not be condescending. Imagine if a guest did the same in your country? Would that be acceptable? I think not", said former Zimbabwean Member of Parliament Fadzayi Mahere.
An account belonging to Kenyan lawyer Miguna Miguna, with 3.1 million followers, also sharply stated that "Africans do not need Macron's permission to speak on their own continent".

The Africa Forward conference in Nairobi gathered over 30 African leaders, business executives, and young entrepreneurs to discuss economic development, innovation, and cooperation between Africa and Europe.
Macron previously told students at the University of Nairobi that "Africa is succeeding" and argued that the continent needs investment to strengthen its sovereignty rather than relying on development aid.
