The Myanmar president is on an official visit to Vietnam from 4-6/9. This marks his first visit to Vietnam since the country completed general elections in january and formed a new government. The visit is also the highest-level delegation exchange between the two nations since 2019.

Born in 1956, Min Aung Hlaing has served as president of Myanmar since april. He previously held many positions within the Myanmar military, including Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces from 2011-2016.

Vietnam and Myanmar established diplomatic relations on 28/5/1975, elevating their ties to a Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership in august 2017.

Bilateral trade turnover between the two countries reached 336 million USD in the first six months of 2026, a 26% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Vietnam's main imports include fruits and vegetables, rubber, electronic products and components, agricultural products, and seafood. Key Vietnamese exports consist of fertilizers, textile raw materials, transportation vehicles, and other machinery and spare parts.

Regarding investment, Vietnam currently has 107 valid investment projects in Myanmar, with a total registered capital exceeding 1,4 billion USD. This places Vietnam 5th out of 87 countries and territories where Vietnam has overseas investments.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Myanmar Nguyen Anh Duc believes President Min Aung Hlaing's visit will consolidate the traditional friendship, strengthen political trust between the two countries, and promote the expansion of bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
