Poland fears border crossings paralyzed as Russia intensifies attacks on Ukraine

Prime Minister Tusk warns of intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine, risking the paralysis of border crossings between Ukraine and Poland.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned on 13/9 that Russia could intensify its attacks on Ukraine in the coming weeks and months, potentially affecting Polish territory and aiming to paralyze border crossings along the Poland-Ukraine border.

Tusk stated that Russia's jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) "have an alarming range and accuracy," making it difficult for Ukraine to effectively counter them, even with thorough preparations.

Tusk added, "I am awaiting information on our readiness for potential UAV attacks, as well as sabotage attempts targeting railway systems and businesses. I do not rule out the possibility of this situation occurring in Poland."

Tusk's remarks coincided with an attack on a Kyiv-Warsaw train at Ukraine's Yagodyn station, located approximately two kilometers from the Polish border. No casualties were reported.

Ukrainian railway company Ukrzaliznytsia reported that the targeted train carried "security advisors from several European Union (EU) member states and former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson." Separately, former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director David Petraeus was on another train at Yagodyn station at the time of the attack.

Russia's Ministry of Defense stated on 13/9 that its strikes targeted railway systems in western Ukraine "used for transporting military supplies from European countries," along with logistics centers, warehouses distributing equipment for the Ukrainian military, and energy facilities supporting ports and logistics infrastructure.

Poland stands as a key ally for Ukraine. Given the closure of Ukrainian airspace, train routes connecting Ukraine and Poland have become a primary conduit for passenger and cargo transport, crucial for both nations and for sustaining military aid to Kyiv.

Ukrainian officials reported that Russian strikes on 13/9 resulted in two fatalities in Kramatorsk, Donetsk province. Separately, approximately 20 people were injured in attacks targeting the Black Sea port city of Odessa.

US-led efforts to end the Ukraine conflict have stalled following multiple unsuccessful negotiation rounds. In an interview released on 12/9, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed readiness to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in the US in December.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, however, dismissed the possibility of such a meeting, reiterating that any discussions could only take place in Moscow. Peskov also mentioned potential negotiations between Russia, the US, and Ukraine in October, but offered no further specifics.
