Police officer's impromptu juggling with World Cup fans goes viral

A Boston officer created a sensation with his impromptu soccer juggling among World Cup fans, stating the event is an opportunity for "even police to blend in with supporters."

On 13/6, the Boston Police Department, Massachusetts, posted a video on X featuring an officer spontaneously juggling a soccer ball amidst US and Scotland fans, then joining them in dancing and celebration after the performance.

"Police work takes on a different feel when the World Cup arrives in the city," the Boston Police Department commented in the video's description. "Officers engaged with both local and international fans on the opening day of the World Cup festival at City Hall Plaza."

The video quickly garnered attention, accumulating over 866,000 views, and prominent accounts like Barstool Sports and CBS News shared it.

The officer seen juggling in the video is Connor Hardy, a 14-year veteran of the Boston Police Department. He played soccer in high school and college. When approached by the media, Hardy expressed his surprise at the video's viral success.

"I noticed a group of US and Scotland supporters passing a ball around," he recalled. "I approached, and they likely assumed the police were there to end their fun and confiscate the ball. I did indeed take the ball, but it was to participate. Everyone was receptive; it was a great time."

Social media users widely praised the moment, noting that it captured the true spirit of the World Cup, where soccer unites fans from diverse nations.

"I was certainly anxious and a bit overwhelmed," Hardy chuckled when asked about his newfound fame. "But it's also exciting. This presents a positive image for Boston, with everyone gathering here, and even the police engaging with the fans. It's truly fantastic."

Boston is set to host 7 World Cup 2026 matches at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, which will be rebranded as Boston Stadium for the duration of the tournament. Beyond five group stage fixtures, the venue will also stage one round of 32 match and one quarter-final, scheduled for 3h on 10/7 Hanoi time. The state of Massachusetts has upgraded Foxboro station and implemented dedicated train services from South Station to facilitate fan transport on match days.
