Vietnam and Russia established diplomatic relations in 1950, elevating their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2012. Last year, the two nations celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations.
Security and defense cooperation forms a key pillar in bilateral relations, with both sides actively promoting it across various fronts. Economic ties are also significant, with two-way trade turnover reaching 4,77 billion USD in 2025, Vietnam Customs reported.
Oil and gas, along with energy, represent another important pillar of bilateral cooperation. Both sides are currently negotiating and advancing agreements in geological exploration and oil and gas extraction. There is also mutual interest in restoring and enhancing cooperation in nuclear energy and developing nuclear power in Vietnam.
Currently, an estimated 60.000 to 80.000 Vietnamese people reside in Russia.
