"Cucurella never disappoints" was the title of a video posted on sports daily AS's Instagram account on 20/7.
The video captured Spanish national team defender Marc Cucurella carrying a replica World Cup trophy along with other belongings in a plastic bag. He clutched the bag opening, wearing flip-flops, and waved to fans. In contrast, his teammates behind him carried Louis Vuitton suitcases containing their replica trophies and wore sneakers.
Cucurella's unassuming style captivated fans. The video garnered millions of views, hundreds of thousands of likes, and thousands of comments.
One user, Andreaduro, commented, "He truly is one of a kind. He held the World Cup trophy as if it were one kilo of tomatoes."
Another user, Vicky Towers, added, "Others put their trophy in a luxurious Louis Vuitton suitcase, but Cucurella put it in a plastic bag. So funny."
The replica World Cup and custom rings for the winning team were gifts from FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He presented them to the Spanish players in the locker room after their one-nil victory over Argentina in the final match at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, on 19/7.
Cucurella, 27 years old, emerged as one of the most prominent players for the Spanish team at the 2026 World Cup. His performances on the field and unique hairstyle drew attention.
He once shared that he spends 30-45 minutes daily caring for his voluminous curly hair. This distinctive feature dates back to his youth football days when his mother, Patricia, let him grow his hair long to easily identify him on the field.
His characteristic hair has often been a subject of jokes among teammates. Lamine Yamal once quipped that Cucurella should cut his hair to run faster. During a 2022 Premier League match between Chelsea and Tottenham, opposing defender Romero pulled Cucurella's hair during a challenge. In 2024, Jack Stephens of Southampton received a red card for pulling Cucurella's hair.
