Princess Leonor, 20, piloted an F-5 jet at Talavera la Real air base in Badajoz on 22/4, accompanied by an instructor from Squadron 23. The video, released by the Spanish royal family on 5/5, shows Princess Leonor in the rear seat of a two-seater F-5 training aircraft. In such training aircraft, both front and rear cockpits are equipped with control systems.
Spain utilizes this fighter jet model for its combat training programs. The Talavera la Real base serves as the training ground for all Spanish air force fighter pilots. Cadets first familiarize themselves with the F-5 before progressing to primary combat aircraft like the EF2000 Eurofighter or EF18 Hornet.

Princess Leonor is first in line to the Spanish throne, the eldest daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia enrolled Leonor in military training in 8/2023.
The program aims to instill discipline, a humanitarian foundation, and a strong sense of public service in her. The Spanish Royal Palace stated that "it is a widely respected and practiced tradition in European parliamentary monarchies for future heads of state to pursue a military career." Under the Spanish constitution, Princess Leonor will become the head of the armed forces upon ascending the throne.
