Delayed by nearly two hours due to thunderstorms, the 250th anniversary celebration of US Independence Day took place at the National Mall in Washington D.C. on the evening of 4/7. Despite the adverse weather, thousands gathered to hear President Donald Trump's anticipated speech.
Opening his speech, President Trump affirmed that the inclement weather could not hinder America's celebration.
" 'I want to thank everyone for doing the right thing. When I saw the lightning strike, I said I would still be here, even if I had to speak at 4 a.m. with only one person watching. Nothing can stop us,' he said to the cheering crowd."

Trump then introduced one of America's first national flags, emphasizing that the Independence Day celebration is an occasion to honor the nation's foundational values.
" 'This flag dates back to 1777, with 13 stars and 13 stripes symbolizing the 13 states that declared independence on 4/7. For the past 250 years, America has always been a symbol of hope, commitment, light, and pride for peoples around the world. Our country is stronger, freer, wealthier, safer, and prouder than ever before,' he affirmed."
The US leader also urged citizens "never to forget that we are a historic and heroic people, carrying a heroic spirit and a heroic mission."
He described this year's anniversary as "one of the most joyous and glorious milestones of all time," and paid tribute to US veterans. " 'We will always lead, never letting our country fall behind. We will always be the best,' he said."
President Trump also addressed partisan issues, such as advocating for the Save America Act and reaffirming his stance supporting the Second Amendment on the right to bear arms. These topics are increasingly prominent in his political messages ahead of the November midterm elections.

The Save America Act, mentioned by Trump, is a bill proposed by Republican lawmakers. It requires voters to prove US citizenship when registering and to carry photo identification when voting in federal elections.
The bill also requires states to transfer voter lists to the government. It was blocked in the US Senate and criticized by Democrats as an attempt to suppress voting in communities that tend to support their party.
John Herman, a resident of Leesburg, Virginia, expressed pride in attending the celebration.
" '250 years of a great power, kind people, and a wonderful country. I truly love this place. As a patriot, I am delighted and grateful to be here. I think every American should kneel and thank God for being born, coming to, or living in this place,' he said."
Across the US, people celebrated Independence Day with parades, concerts, fireworks, and numerous patriotic events. However, severe thunderstorms and record heat disrupted festivities in some cities, forcing organizers to postpone, adjust, or cancel some commemorative programs.
