"The military is building a massive complex beneath the ballroom. This project is progressing well, actually ahead of schedule. It's all one integrated structure. The ballroom essentially serves as the roof for the underground facility," President Donald Trump stated on 29/3 aboard Air Force One. This ambitious construction, part of the White House East Wing renovation, also includes advanced security enhancements for the ballroom itself.
The President mentioned that the plan for this underground military structure was only recently revealed "due to a silly lawsuit." He confirmed the complex will feature modern security measures. The ballroom will incorporate reinforced materials and a design resistant to new-generation threats. "We will have bulletproof glass, and a drone-proof roof and ceiling. Everything is drone-proof and bulletproof. Unfortunately, we live in an era where that is necessary," he explained.

Initiated in October 2025, Mr. Trump ordered the demolition of nearly the entire White House East Wing to construct a large-scale ballroom. This facility is intended for official receptions and state dinners. Notably, the project proceeded without the complex review processes typically applied to architectural changes in Washington. This marks one of the most ambitious renovation projects at the White House in over a century. Its privately funded budget significantly expanded from 200 million USD to 400 million USD.
President Trump emphasized that the project does not utilize federal funds. "Not a single government dollar was used for the ballroom," he stated, clarifying that all funding originated from his personal contributions and various donors. Previously, US administrations often had to erect outdoor tents to host large-scale events, as the dining room in the East Wing only accommodated about 200 guests. The Trump administration asserts that the ballroom was designed to harmonize with the White House's architecture and scale, viewing it as a structure that honors this historic building.
