US-China foreign ministers hold talks ahead of Trump-Xi meeting

US Secretary of State Rubio held a phone conversation with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, about one week before President Xi Jinping's visit to the United States.

"Wang Yi emphasized that both sides should act in a spirit of equality, respect, and mutual benefit, while preparing for the next stage of high-level dialogue," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said regarding the phone call between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his US counterpart Marco Rubio on 17/9/2024.

Wang Yi urged both sides to "send a positive message that China and the United States are committed to promoting a constructive relationship with strategic stability, and jointly advance global peace and development".

The phone call reportedly aimed at finalizing details for President Xi Jinping's visit to the United States. The two leaders are expected to hold talks on 24/9/2024.

An anonymous US official stated that President Trump would extend a rare welcoming protocol to President Xi Jinping when the Chinese leader arrives in Washington next week, by personally greeting him at the airport.

The phone call between the US and Chinese foreign ministers occurred a few days before a meeting between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, aimed at finalizing the agenda for the summit.

The US and Chinese foreign ministers previously had a similar exchange about two weeks before President Trump's state visit to China in May. Rubio most recently met Wang Yi in July on the sidelines of the ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Manila. The two had a 90-minute meeting, discussing potential outcomes for the September summit.

Experts anticipate that during their upcoming meeting in Washington, President Trump and President Xi will discuss shaping the framework for economic and trade cooperation, AI governance, the potential resumption of arms control talks, and promoting military communication channels. Additionally, the tense situation in the Middle East is also expected to be on the agenda.

Shortly after leaving Beijing in May, President Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he and the Chinese President would meet three more times this year.

President Trump stated that President Xi had invited him to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen in November. The US leader added that the Chinese President also planned to attend the G20 summit in Miami in December.
