US recalls 19 million eggs due to bacterial contamination risk

19 million chicken eggs produced at Texas farms and distributed by Midwest Poultry Services, L.P., have been recalled due to bacterial contamination risk.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Midwest Poultry Services, L.P., is voluntarily recalling nearly 1.6 million cartons, equivalent to about 19 million eggs, due to salmonella contamination risk.

The recall includes both brown and white shell eggs produced at farms in Texas and distributed by Indiana-based Midwest Poultry Services, L.P.

The eggs were sold to consumers at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana, Brookshire's grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, and other smaller retail and food service outlets, as well as stores in Mississippi and New Mexico.

The recalled eggs have 'best by' dates ranging from 20/7 to 17/8, including those sold under Kroger's Simple Truth brand. Other brands include Country Corning, Cal-Maine Sunups, and Brookshire's. Consumers can identify the recalled egg cartons by checking for plant numbers P-1950 or 0840962 along with Julian dates from 157 to 184.

Kroger has not yet responded to requests for comment. Brookshire Grocery Co. stated it began reviewing inventory and removing potentially affected products after receiving the notification.

The FDA added that as of the notification time, no illnesses had been reported in connection with Midwest Poultry Services' eggs.

After identifying a potential egg safety issue, Midwest Poultry redirected eggs to a processing facility for pasteurization, conducted an internal investigation, and performed testing to determine the source of potential salmonella enteritidis contamination.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause serious, and potentially fatal, infections in young children, frail or elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Symptoms typically appear within 12-72 hours after consuming contaminated food and can last for 4 to 7 days. Symptoms include: diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, and abdominal cramps.

The US is currently dealing with a salmonella outbreak. 17 states have reported illness cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A total of 98 people have fallen ill, with 26 requiring hospitalization. Most reported cases, 73, are in Texas. The CDC's map of affected states indicates one to two cases in Michigan. No deaths have been reported.

The FDA advises consumers, restaurants, and retailers who have purchased or received recalled eggs to carefully clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that the recalled eggs may have contacted. They should also wash hands, utensils, and surfaces with hot, soapy water before and after handling raw eggs and foods containing raw eggs.
