US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent faced an unexpected delay at the entrance of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing as he was about to attend talks between the US and Chinese delegations.
A video shows Chinese security personnel stopping Bessent outside the hall, pointing to his lapel, and stating in English, "Pin, pin." The US Secretary appeared confused, turning to his right where someone explained the situation to the Chinese security. Following a brief exchange, a member of his entourage provided Bessent with a small item, seemingly the identification lapel pin required for the talks. Bessent then proceeded into the hall.
Later, another protocol issue arose after the talks, when President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping visited the historic Temple of Heaven. There, US reporters were confined to a room and prevented from following the two leaders for nearly 30 minutes. This occurred because Chinese security personnel refused entry to an armed US Secret Service agent. Ultimately, after a prolonged and tense discussion, both sides reached a compromise, allowing the US press corps to leave the room and continue covering the event.
These minor disruptions occurred during President Donald Trump's visit to China on 14/5, which included a welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, bilateral talks, and a tour of the Temple of Heaven.
