During a Security Council meeting on the Ukraine conflict on 27/7, Dan Negrea, the US alternate representative to the United Nations General Assembly, stated, "There is one council member that consistently displays moral outrage and presumes to lecture other nations on every issue, from the conflict we are discussing to topics unrelated to international peace and security."

"That is why we left the room when France spoke," he said, adding that Washington would continue this action until Paris "stops its condescending and disrespectful tone."

According to AFP, a delegation leaving a meeting of the Security Council, the United Nations' most powerful body where both the US and France are permanent members with veto power, is a very rare occurrence.

French Ambassador to the United Nations Jerome Bonnafont stated that this year marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, emphasizing that "everyone knows the role France played in that process."

Bonnafont affirmed that France would continue to coordinate with member states in the Security Council and the General Assembly to protect the United Nations' role, independence, and operational capacity, thereby implementing the Charter's goals, promoting human rights, and maintaining peace.

US-France relations became strained after the United Nations General Assembly voted on 24/7 with 144 votes in favor, 10 against, and 13 abstentions to extend the term of Human Rights Commissioner Volker Turk by four years, as proposed by Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

The US was among the 10 countries that voted against, while France supported the extension. Following the vote, both sides made statements expressing their disagreement on the matter.

United Nations Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq declined to comment on the US delegation leaving the meeting room, while emphasizing that the organization expects member states to respect decisions adopted by the General Assembly.
