Bhopal city drew attention after images of a railway overpass with a near 90-degree turn circulated on social media, sparking public criticism. The Bhopal administration responded by suspending 7 engineers.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav posted on X, "I have taken note of the serious lapse in the construction of the Aishbagh overpass and ordered an inquiry. Based on the inquiry report, action has been taken against 8 engineers of the Public Works Department (PWD)."
Seven engineers, including two chief engineers, were immediately suspended, and an internal inquiry was initiated against a retired chief engineer.

The construction company and the design consultant were blacklisted. A committee was formed to implement necessary changes to the overpass. The chief minister added that the overpass will be inaugurated only after these improvements are made.
As images of the 90-degree turn surfaced on social media, many shared and created content around it. Locals questioned how drivers would navigate the sharp turn. The 648-meter overpass, built at a cost of 2 million USD, was designed to improve connectivity between Mahamai Ka Bagh, Pushpa Nagar, and the railway station area with New Bhopal. This project was expected to benefit an estimated 300,000 people.

The PWD formed a committee last week to seek solutions. Officials involved in the construction argued that the design was due to land scarcity and the proximity of a metro station. They suggested that with more land, the 90-degree angle could have been curved. However, acquiring land and implementing changes would require more funds and time, delaying the inauguration.
