82-year-old driver causes fatal wrong-way crash on Italian highway

An elderly driver's wrong-way journey on the Turin-Milan A4 highway resulted in a head-on collision with an SUV, killing 4, on 27/7.

Around noon on 27/7, 82-year-old Egidio Ceriano entered the A4 highway in his Peugeot 207. After missing the Marcallo-Mesero toll booth, Ceriano turned around, mistakenly driving against traffic.

Reports indicate he drove over 6 km in the wrong direction before colliding head-on with a Peugeot 3008 SUV carrying 4 people. Both vehicles were traveling at speeds exceeding 100 km/h.

The victims included Ceriano, and 3 occupants of the SUV: Mario Paglino, 52, and Gianni Grossi, 55, internationally renowned Barbie doll designers, and another man.

In 1999, Paglino and Grossi co-founded Magia2000, a company known for its collaborations with Mattel, specializing in custom-made Barbie dolls. They created dolls inspired by celebrities like Madonna, Lady Gaga, Cher, Sophia Loren, and Victoria Beckham. They also co-founded the Italian Doll Convention in 2011, Europe’s largest fashion doll event.

The sole survivor, a woman in the SUV, sustained serious injuries, including chest trauma and broken limbs. Her condition, while serious, is not life-threatening. The other man in the SUV, besides the two doll designers, was her husband.
