B-segment sedans in April: Mazda2's surprise surge

The Mazda2 unexpectedly surpassed the Honda City and Hyundai Accent to secure second place in April's B-segment sedan sales, while the Toyota Vios continued to lead the segment.

B-segment sedan sales in Vietnam reached 2,333 units in April, a slight decrease from the 2,347 units sold last month. Despite this, the segment maintained stable sales after a period of significant fluctuations earlier in the year.

The Toyota Vios maintained its position as the segment's best-selling model in April, with 750 units sold. This brought its year-to-date sales to 3,487 units, establishing a substantial lead over its rivals. However, April's results saw a decrease of 254 units compared to March, when the Toyota sedan achieved sales of over 1,000 units, driven by numerous incentive programs and increased demand for service vehicles.

The most significant development in the segment last month came from the Mazda2. The Japanese automaker's sedan recorded sales of 640 units, a sharp increase from 433 units the previous month, marking the highest growth rate in the segment. This performance allowed the Mazda2 to surpass both the Honda City and Hyundai Accent, climbing to second place in April's sales. For the first four months of the year, the Mazda2's cumulative sales reached 1,687 units, placing it among the top 3 leading vehicles. This marks a rare instance of the Mazda sedan breaking into the upper tier, as the B-segment sedan segment has historically been dominated by a fierce competition between the Toyota Vios, Hyundai Accent, and Honda City.

The Honda City ranked third in April with 484 units sold, an increase of 86 units from the previous month. It maintained its second overall position in cumulative sales for the segment, reaching 2,165 units after the first four months of the year. This means the leading group in the B-segment sedan segment currently comprises models from Japanese brands.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai Accent recorded sales of 323 units, a decrease of 46 units from the previous month, causing it to fall to the lower tier of the segment in April's rankings. After the first four months, Hyundai's sedan had cumulative sales of 1,634 units, significantly lower than the leading group. The Mitsubishi Attrage sold 136 units in April, a slight decrease from the previous month. The Kia Soluto continued not to disclose its sales figures in the Vietnamese market.

As the automotive market increasingly shifts towards SUVs and urban crossovers, B-segment sedans no longer hold the dominant position they once did. However, they continue to maintain stable sales due to their accessible pricing, low fuel consumption, and suitability for both service fleets and daily use.
