An underage driver was killed when a Xiaomi SU7 electric vehicle, rented from a company, crashed on a mountain road in Ganzhou, Jiangxi province, early on 26/11. According to iFeng, both the driver and a passenger were minors and did not possess driver's licenses. Data indicates the vehicle was exceeding the speed limit at the time of the accident.
The impact was so severe that a guardrail pierced directly through the front of the car into the cabin, killing the driver instantly. The passenger reportedly fled the scene afterward.
This incident highlights persistent loopholes in vehicle rental companies' verification processes. A national standard in China, which came into effect last November, explicitly requires the verification of renters' driving qualifications. Despite this, the unauthorized rental of vehicles by minors remains a recurring issue.
Such cases reveal that minors successfully rent vehicles by impersonating adults, using falsified documents, or through online intermediaries, posing significant risks to road safety.
