On the afternoon of 3/9, a Honda sedan driven by a man in his 70s was traveling on Pine Acres Boulevard. The car suddenly accelerated across a grassy area, down a hill, and became airborne, flying over the Sunrise Highway, one of Long Island's busiest roads.
The car cleared all six lanes of traffic and landed in a tree on the other side of the highway. Remarkably, the driver sustained only minor injuries, according to News 12 Long Island.
"It looked like a meteor flying across the highway. At first, I didn't know it was a car," said Brandon Hyacinthe, who captured the dramatic incident on his dashcam. His vehicle was only a few meters away from the airborne sedan.
The accident didn't involve any other vehicles, and no pedestrians were injured.
Bay Shore Fire Chief John Ippolito Jr. said the car must have been traveling significantly faster than the 30 mph (48 km/h) speed limit on Pine Acres Boulevard to achieve the necessary height for the jump.
Police haven't released details about what caused the driver to lose control, and no charges have been filed. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital.
