China adds another state-owned automaker

Changan, headquartered in Chongqing, becomes a state-owned enterprise under direct government management.

Changan is now under the direct management of the Chinese government, overseen by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC). This places the group on the same administrative level as other major automakers like FAW and Dongfeng.

The company was officially registered on 27/7 with registered capital of 20 billion yuan (approximately 2.75 billion USD). Zhu Huarong, the current chairman of Changan Automobile, is listed as the legal representative and is expected to play a key leadership role. The company is headquartered in Chongqing.

On the evening of 28/7, the official accounts of Changan Auto and affiliated brands like Changan Qiyuan and Avatr released promotional materials to mark the group's establishment. The posters showcased Avatr, Deepal, Qiyuan, Changan Auto, and Changan Kaicheng as representative brands. The group’s first press conference is scheduled for July 30.

According to the company’s statement, the new Changan entity will manage 117 subsidiaries across various businesses, including passenger and commercial vehicle manufacturing, auto parts, financial and logistical services, and motorcycles.

Changan leadership stated the company will focus on emerging technologies like intelligent vehicle robotics, flying cars, and integrated artificial intelligence as part of its efforts to build a "new quality production force".

The group also plans to explore integrated land, sea, and air mobility solutions. It aims to accelerate global expansion in five regions: Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Latin America, Asia-Europe, and Europe.

In the first half of this year, Changan's global sales reached 1.355 million vehicles, a 6.8% increase year-over-year and the highest first-half figure since 2018. New energy vehicle sales reached 448,000 units, a 52.3% increase, representing 33.1% of total sales. Overseas sales exceeded 300,000 vehicles, a 49% growth.

In the electric vehicle segment, Changan’s Deepal brand sold over 120,000 vehicles in the first half of the year. Meanwhile, the premium electric vehicle brand Avatr recorded cumulative sales of over 150,000 vehicles.
