Driver opens car door without looking

A woman opened her car door without checking her surroundings, striking a dashcam-equipped vehicle on 6/9 in Ngai Cau, An Khanh.

The incident: On a narrow road, a dashcam-equipped car had slowed down, moving to the right to allow an oncoming vehicle to pass. At that moment, the woman in the driver's seat abruptly pushed open her car door without checking behind her, her eyes fixed forward. The door forcefully struck the front of the dashcam-equipped car.

Driving safety: Careless door opening poses a risk of collision with other vehicles or serious accidents for motorcyclists and cyclists approaching from behind. Drivers should use their right hand to open the door from the driver's seat. This action forces the body and neck to turn backward, allowing the driver to easily check the rearview mirror and blind spot before slightly opening the door.

Drivers should thoroughly check their exterior rearview mirror and turn their head to check blind spots. Then, partially open the door about 10 cm to observe further and warn approaching vehicles from behind. Only when safety is confirmed should the door be opened wide enough to exit, then quickly closed. According to Decree 168 on road traffic penalties, unsafe opening of a car door that results in an accident incurs a fine of 20-22 million dong and a deduction of 10 points from the driver's license.

For moving vehicles, when passing areas with cars parked close to the roadside, drivers should proactively reduce speed, maintain a safe distance from parked cars, and be ready to use their horn and warning lights.
