Electric vehicle safety during fluctuating weather

Amid unpredictable sunshine and rain, electric vehicle owners should take precautions such as covering their vehicles when parked, avoiding immediate charging after driving in hot weather, and performing regular checks.

Many areas are experiencing extreme weather, with hot mornings followed by sudden downpours. These fluctuations in weather, temperature, and humidity not only affect daily life but also pose challenges for electric vehicle users.

Safe, efficient, and economical operation of electric motorcycles and cars is a major concern for many, especially since these vehicles are directly impacted by environmental factors.

Impact of extreme weather on electric vehicles

Prolonged hot weather can lead to ambient temperatures of 35-40°C. Under these conditions, lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in both electric motorcycles and cars, are prone to overheating if parked outdoors for extended periods or charged immediately after a long drive. Studies show that the optimal operating temperature range for lithium-ion batteries is 20-30°C. Operating above this range for extended periods can reduce battery life, accelerate degradation, and in some cases, decrease vehicle performance.

Sudden downpours can also damage vehicle components if not properly protected. For electric motorcycles, the low placement of the battery and controller increases the risk of short circuits when riding through water, especially in older vehicles with worn seals. Exposed charging ports and adapters are also vulnerable to moisture and short circuits during rain.

Most electric cars have good water resistance. However, frequent driving through water or prolonged outdoor parking can compromise sealing and lead to premature wear.

Tips for using electric vehicles in fluctuating weather

To ensure safety and maintain performance during extreme weather, owners should adjust their usage habits. First, avoid prolonged parking in direct sunlight, especially during midday. Choose shaded or covered parking, ideally in designated parking garages. For electric cars parked outdoors, consider using a heat-reflective car cover.

Avoid charging the battery immediately after a long drive or operation in hot weather, as this can impact long-term battery life. Allow the vehicle to rest for 15-30 minutes in a cool, ventilated area before charging. Many electric cars have battery cooling systems that activate during charging or when the battery temperature rises. These systems are still rare in electric motorcycles.

During rain, avoid flooded areas if possible. After riding or driving in the rain, dry the charging port and connectors. If charging an electric motorcycle at home with a separate adapter, keep it in a dry, ventilated area. Avoid placing the adapter upright or covering its ventilation holes, a common mistake that can damage the charger with continuous use.

Plastic bags for covering charging guns during rain are sold online, but these can be dangerous. They can cause the charging gun to overheat, affecting charging efficiency or causing malfunctions. Condensation can also occur, leading to premature oxidation of the charging terminals. Furthermore, if punctured, rainwater can collect inside the bag. Most charging guns and ports are waterproof, typically rated IP55 or higher, sufficient for light rain or splashing, and equipped with multiple layers of protection against short circuits for both the vehicle and the user. Therefore, covering a charging vehicle during rain is unnecessary.

In addition to adjusting daily usage habits, regular maintenance is essential. The battery system, controller, electrical connectors, and waterproof seals are susceptible to temperature and humidity changes and should be checked regularly at authorized service centers or reputable facilities.
