The California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Los Banos reported that the driver, for unknown reasons, veered off the road and crashed through the median. The impact sent the guardrail through the Tesla's nose and out the rear. Fortunately, no one was sitting in the middle of the backseat.
Images of the wrecked Model Y are shocking. While the sides of the car appear largely undamaged, the guardrail protruding from both the front and back is a terrifying sight.

The guardrail entered through the front of the car, slightly to the left.

And exited through the rear, slightly to the right.
"Luckily for the driver, they sustained only minor injuries and were able to walk away," the Los Banos CHP stated in a Facebook post. "Driving requires 100% focus on the road. Avoid distractions and stay focused on driving."
Police confirmed no arrests were made and no drugs or alcohol were suspected to be involved. The report also noted that the Tesla's "cruise control and lane assist features" were engaged. However, it's unclear whether this refers to Full Self-Driving (FSD) or the cruise control and lane assist features integrated into Autopilot.
According to Tesla, Autopilot includes traffic-aware cruise control, which matches the car's speed to surrounding traffic, and autosteer, which assists steering within clearly marked lanes and uses traffic-aware cruise control.
FSD includes Autopilot features and advanced driver-assistance capabilities such as automatic lane changes, autopark, summon (moving the car in and out of tight spaces using a mobile app), and smart summon (summoning the car from a parking spot to the driver's location within a reasonable distance).
Numerous accidents worldwide have occurred with drivers engaging FSD or Autopilot in Teslas. Assuming the car can fully drive itself, some drivers relinquish control, leading to potentially serious consequences given the current limitations of self-driving technology.
