Sales of mid-size luxury sedans in Europe decreased by 19% in the first 10 months of the year, totaling 241,096 units. According to Automotive News, citing Dataforce figures, BMW 3 series sales in Europe fell by 23% to 60,237 units by the end of october.
The newly launched Audi A5, replacing its A4 predecessor, holds the second position. With 53,483 units sold so far, it stands as a bright spot for Audi in an otherwise somber segment.
Mercedes C-class sales decreased by 14% this year, reaching 41,335 units. BMW's i4 electric vehicle also saw a slight decline, down 1.6% to 36,982 units.

A similar trend is evident among lower-ranked models. Volvo S60 and V60 combined sold 16,476 units, a 35% decrease. Polestar 2 sales dropped by 26% to 14,099 units, while the BMW 4 series saw a 12% reduction to 10,081 units. Even the Alfa Romeo Giulia, despite its loyal fanbase, recorded a 20% decline.
Supply shortages are not the sole challenge. Auto News reports that car buyers are exploring other segments. For example, demand for mid-size SUVs is high, including models with plug-in hybrid powertrain options such as the BYD Seal U.
Some automakers are banking on electric vehicles to reverse this segment's fortunes. BMW is focusing on developing the next-generation 3 series, which will be offered in both internal combustion engine and electric versions.
This electric model, anticipated to be named i3, will utilize technology from the upcoming iX3. This includes a more efficient powertrain and improved range, positioning it as a pivotal product in BMW's electric vehicle strategy.
Mercedes is pursuing a similar strategy with its next-generation C-class, expected to launch in 2026. The forthcoming electric version will share a platform with the new GLC SUV, targeting a scalable, more electric vehicle-centric architecture.
Another contributing factor to this decline is a 30% reduction in fleet sales for the segment, as buyers transition to mid-size SUVs. Notably, many of these SUVs offer more features and a broader range of powertrain options, including plug-in hybrids (PHEV), compared to premium sedans.
Germany remains the largest market for mid-size luxury sedans, holding a 37% market share. Sales in the UK experienced a significant drop, falling by 26% and reducing its market share to 16%. Following these are Italy (6.2%), Sweden (4.7%), and Poland/France (4%).
