MG Windsor EV: India's best-selling electric car

July sales for the Windsor EV reached a new high, marking the 10th consecutive month the electric vehicle has topped the charts.

With 4,308 vehicles delivered in July, the Windsor EV not only maintained its position as India's top-selling electric vehicle for 10 consecutive months but also achieved a new peak in monthly sales.

This figure significantly contributed to MG's total sales of 6,678 vehicles in July. Compared to July 2024, when the company recorded 4,575 vehicles, this represents a 46% year-over-year increase. The growth compared to the previous month (6/2025) with 5,829 vehicles is also notable at 14.6%, reflecting increased demand across MG's product portfolio, primarily driven by the Windsor EV.

The Windsor EV's sustained appeal is attributed to its diverse range of versions and customer-centric ownership models. The car is available in five variants, spread across two battery options: a 38 kWh and a larger 52.9 kWh pack. The recent addition of Pro variants with the larger battery and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) has attracted buyers seeking extended range and safety features.

Another distinguishing feature of the Windsor EV is MG's Battery as a Service (BaaS) option. This ownership model allows customers to purchase the car at a lower upfront cost of around 1,000,000 rupees (11,400 USD) while paying a usage fee of 3.9 rupees per kilometer of battery usage.

For those who prefer traditional car ownership, the fixed-battery versions start at 1,400,000 rupees (16,000 USD). This flexibility makes the Windsor EV an attractive option for a wide range of customers, especially those comparing it to competitors like the Tata Nexon EV or Mahindra XUV400.

The Windsor EV's technical specifications further enhance its appeal. The permanent magnet synchronous motor delivers 136 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque, suitable for both city driving and long highway journeys. The larger 52.9 kWh battery version offers an ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India)-certified range of 449 km, addressing the range anxiety that still affects many electric vehicle buyers.

The car supports 7.4 kW AC charging, while DC fast charging up to 60 kW can replenish the battery from 0-80% in about 50 minutes.

Regional trends also play a significant role in the Windsor EV's success. Southern states like Karnataka, Telangana, and Kerala account for nearly 47% of MG's electric vehicle sales, thanks to better charging infrastructure, state-level incentives, and earlier user adoption. These areas have emerged as hotspots for electric vehicle penetration, and MG's consistent focus has yielded results.

In July, total electric vehicle sales in India reached 15,423 units, a 93% growth compared to the same period in 2024. The Windsor alone accounted for 33%, demonstrating its market influence. MG's electric vehicle market share also increased from 28% in Quarter I to 32% in Quarter II, indicating that the Windsor is not just a consistent best-seller but also a market-shaping model.

The production capacity of JSW MG Motor (a joint venture between India's JSW and SAIC, MG's parent company) is being expanded to meet growing demand. The company is expanding its Halol facility in Gujarat to increase capacity from 100,000 to 300,000 units per year by 2027. This is expected to not only address supply constraints but also support the launch of new products.

MG's broader product strategy also includes expansion into the premium segment through the MG Select channel, which retails models like the luxury MPV M9 and the electric sports car Cyberster. While these models will enhance brand perception and target a different buyer segment, the Windsor EV remains central to MG's sales growth and market share.

In the top 10 best-selling electric vehicles in India this year, MG has two other products besides the Windsor EV: the Comet EV and ZS EV.
