A reckless overtaking maneuver on National Highway 3 in Phu Luong commune on 5/6 resulted in a head-on collision between two motorcycles. The incident occurred when a motorcycle, carrying two people without helmets, veered into the oncoming lane to pass other vehicles. This led to a direct impact with another motorcycle traveling correctly.
The motorcyclist in the proper lane was thrown onto the sidewalk, lost their helmet, and became unconscious. The two individuals on the encroaching motorcycle were also thrown onto the road; the driver was unconscious, while the passenger regained consciousness and attempted to assist the victim. Casualties are currently unclear.
According to Decree 168 on road traffic penalties, a motorcycle driver who illegally overtakes and causes an accident faces a fine of 10-14 million dong and a deduction of 10 points from their driver's license. Additionally, not wearing a helmet is punishable by a fine of 400,000-600,000 dong.
Vehicle operators must not overtake unless safe conditions are fully ensured, and they should avoid tailgating other vehicles when attempting to pass. Furthermore, always wear a standard, properly fitted helmet when participating in traffic.
