Porsche 911 Turbo 50 years: A rare sports car in Vietnam

Commemorating 50 years of the first 911 Turbo, Porsche has created a special edition. Two of these vehicles have arrived in Vietnam, priced from 18.7 billion VND.

Porsche introduced its iconic 911 sports car in 1963, but the Turbo variant didn't appear until 1974. The 911 Turbo marked the first time the German manufacturer incorporated turbocharging technology into a commercial sports car. Previously, this technology was only used in Porsche's motorsport racing models.

In 8/2024, Porsche celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 911 Turbo. To mark this milestone, the company created the Porsche 911 Turbo 50 Years, a special edition based on the current 911 generation (code 992.1). Two other Porsche 911 variants, the Carrera and GTS, have received the new facelift update (code 992.2).

The 911 Turbo 50 Years is limited to 1,974 units, the same year the 911 Turbo debuted. Currently, two rare examples have arrived in the Vietnamese market and both have already found owners.

Besides the timeless design, the 50 Years special edition features unique exterior and interior accents. For example, the side decals are reminiscent of the RSR Turbo concept car, the predecessor of the 1974 911 Turbo. The number 63 on the side was a custom order by the owner, based on the Turbo 50 Years Heritage Design Package.

The optional design package also includes 5-spoke Sport Classic wheels in two-tone white and silver. The front wheels measure 20 inches and the rear wheels 21 inches. This design package cost the owner over one billion VND.

The sports suspension on the 911 Turbo 50 Years lowers the car by 10 mm compared to the standard version. The large grey rear wing is inspired by the first-generation 911 Turbo.

The wheels on the Porsche 911 Turbo 50 Years have center lock hubs, a mechanism for quickly changing wheels typically found on supercars or race cars. The logos on the hood, wheels, and steering wheel are the older style used in the 1970s.

On the rear engine cover, a circular badge commemorating 50 years of the Turbo line is finished in white and gold.

The Porsche 911 Turbo 50 Years boasts a twin-turbocharged 3.7-liter 6-cylinder engine, producing 650 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque, the same as the 911 Turbo S. With the Sport Chrono Package, the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds.

The "Turbo 50" lettering and the Porsche script on the rear are gold-plated. The car has LED taillights, which the owner personalized with a smoky grey exterior finish.

The car's interior is similar to the standard 911 Turbo. A highlight is the Dress Mackenzie plaid fabric on the seats, inspired by the design of the first 911 Turbos. The 911 Porsche made specifically for founder Ferry Porsche on his 67th birthday also featured this pattern in the interior.

The speedometer behind the steering wheel and the clock on the dashboard both have white markings and blue numerals, reminiscent of the first-generation 911 Turbos.

The car's interior is also decorated with metallic grey trim mixed with copper gold. Porsche calls this color Turbonite, which is reserved for the Turbo versions of their models.

The plaid fabric pattern is also used on the dashboard and door panels. In this Porsche sports car, besides the central touchscreen, all other buttons are mechanical.

The 50 Years edition badge is located on the dashboard near the passenger-side door. The car is limited to 1,974 units, and one car in Vietnam bears the serial number 499.

The Turbo 50 Years badge is also featured on the headrests. Like the standard 911 models, the two rear seats in this special edition are primarily for children or personal belongings.

The Porsche 911 Turbo 50 Years has a standard selling price of 18.7 billion VND, imported from Germany. The model featured in this article has additional options, bringing the price to over 20 billion VND.
