Controversy erupted after a widely shared post from an X account. The user questioned whether the two-tier flyover, part of the Metro Line 9 project, might exacerbate traffic congestion rather than alleviate it. Images showing the flyover's four lanes suddenly constricting to two sparked a new debate on road planning and approval processes in the rapidly developing suburb.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) denied any design flaws and provided an explanation. Aaditya Thackeray, a leader of the Shiv Sena party, also joined the online debate, sarcastically criticizing Eknath Shinde, the official in charge of MMRDA. He even called it a "masterpiece", adding, "Next year, another memorandum of understanding will be signed to teach this design to other countries".
Thackeray argued that the design should ensure a smooth and safe lane transition. In contrast, the sudden narrowing of a four-lane section to two could lead to chaos and congestion.
In response, MMRDA stated that they have planned for future expansion of the flyover, subject to necessary approvals and coordination with a city corporation. The authority added that the flyover aims to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. It will also incorporate safety measures such as clear signage, speed reduction markings, and crash barriers. Input from traffic police will be integrated before the flyover opens for use.
