Road test: China's most complex driving examination

After the instructor verifies information, candidates must exit the vehicle and walk counter-clockwise around it to inspect the exterior and tires.

The process for obtaining a driver's license in China primarily consists of four steps: a theoretical exam; a basic maneuvering course exam; a road test; and a multiple-choice exam on practical knowledge and civilized driving.

The road test is the most complex procedure, demanding a combination of driving and safety skills. An example of this rigorous test is seen in a video featuring a female candidate taking her exam in an automatic transmission vehicle.

Video: Coach Xu from Wuhan

The video uses three camera angles: front of the car, inside the car, and at the accelerator and brake pedals. In the car, besides the examiner and the candidate, there are three other candidates in the back seats.

A crucial safety procedure in the road test occurs at the very beginning. After candidates greet the examiner and present identification, they must exit the vehicle and walk counter-clockwise around it to inspect the exterior and tires. Failure to perform this step results in a point deduction.

The test also includes a simulated night driving section, where candidates must activate lights according to voice instructions from the system. Other familiar skills assessed include turning right and left at intersections, making U-turns, pulling over to the side, and overtaking other vehicles. The candidate in the video successfully passed this road test.
